Empowering Men’s Health: Celebrating Men’s Health Month with Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

In addition to celebrating Pride Month, we are also bringing attention to men’s health for Men’s Health Awareness Month this June. An estimated 8-10% of men will suffer from pelvic pain at some point in their lives. Despite this, pelvic pain is often referred to as a “women’s health issue,” when this is, in fact, not the case! Join us as we dive into common symptoms and associated diagnoses, and whether pelvic floor physical therapy may be right for you!

Some common diagnoses associated with male pelvic floor health include, but are not limited to:

  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Testicular pain
  • Post prostatectomy care
  • Post vasectomy care
  • Premature ejaculation
  • Peyronie’s disease
  • Pudendal Neuralgia
  • Painful bladder syndrome (Interstitial Cystitis)

Pelvic floor physical therapists trained in the assessment and treatment of male pelvic floor dysfunction can identify musculoskeletal issues that may be contributing to the symptoms of any of the above diagnoses. Some patients may experience one or a combination of symptoms as part of their presentation. These symptoms may include:

  • Penile, scrotal, perineal or anal pain
  • Groin pain
  • Post-ejaculatory pain
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Tailbone pain (Coccydynia)
  • Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
  • Pain that limits sitting and exercise tolerance
  • Urinary urgency, frequency and hesitancy
  • Slow or weak urinary stream
  • Constipation

Pelvic floor physical therapy can help with the variety of diagnoses and symptoms that may present in male patients. It is important to find a pelvic floor PT who is trained to treat male patients. At TVPH, we have multiple physical therapists who are trained in the evaluation and treatment of male pelvic floor dysfunction. We are dedicated to providing effective and personalized care for all! Our PTs are here to support your journey to better health and wellness, so please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns, as well as to learn more about how we can best help you!
